Welcome to My Blog and Ten Facts about Myself!

Writer's picture: mattmanmattman

Hello dear reader.

Welcome to the Matt-astical World of Matthew!

For a while, I’ve debated to myself whether I should start my own blog. On the one hand, I really enjoy writing personal literature. I like to mix my creative insights with my ability to go off on long tangents. On the other hand, I’m not a writer or looking into it as a career path. Journalism is not my current trajectory at the moment.

The main issue for me has been a lack of time to do this. As much as I wanted to do this, it was going to take up a good amount of my free time and commitment to write a blog. But with the whole world essentially shutting down due to the Coronavirus, I have tons of that now. So here it is!

My intent of writing this blog is to share my opinions and experiences (cause ya know, everyone wants to know what goes on in my head). I feel there are so many stories from my life that I can write about in this blog. That’s not to say I will restrict myself to just that. I may expand my horizons above personal literature. But for now, I’m gonna stick to my thoughts and past experiences for blog posts.

I just want to restate this though: I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL WRITER! Not everything I write here is going to be perfect. So don't expect Shakespeare-level work out of me. I am not making any money off of this blog nor do I intend to. This is just a pastime to me, my personal outlet through writing. If you don’t like what I am writing, there is a perfectly functional ‘x’ button at the top right of your screen.

Since I am creating a blog, I guess I should give you all a better clue of who I am. Here are ten facts about myself:

My name is Matthew

Kind of a cop out for my first fact huh? If the title of this article wasn’t already a giveaway, my name is Matthew. A lot of people ask me whether I prefer Matt or Matthew. Honestly, I don’t care. I’m not sure why this matters to other people with the same name. It’s three letters guys! You can call me Matt, or you can call me Matthew, but you doesn’t have to call me Mattholomeo (oh yeah, bonus fact: I use a lot of references to other media. Get used to that).

I Live in Delaware

Delawhere? You know, that small little place engulfed by Maryland? WE WERE THE FIRST STATE DAMMIT!

I've lived in Delaware my whole life. It's actually a nice place to live contrary to what some may think. You’re close enough to all the more relevant Eastern coast states to visit the cool attractions. You’re also far enough from them to not get majorly involved in their problems. It’s quiet and can get boring at times, but I make adventures here when I can.

Our state bird is the blue hen. Speaking of...

I Go to the University of Delaware

ROLL HENS! FIGHTING BLUE! BLEED 302! Now that I got THAT out of the way...

As of writing this article, I am currently a freshman at the University of Delaware. Not sure I should even say that, seeing as how I am at home typing this. I am a Computer Science major with a possible minor in leadership. I won’t get too in detail about being a college student right now. But I will say I have enjoyed my time up there so far and deeply miss being there. Expect UD to be mentioned in a lot of blog posts.

I Have Two Parents and One Brother

Since I am not living at the University of Delaware right now, I currently reside at home with my mother, father, and younger brother. Some basic information about them: My mother does a lot of teaching in manufacturing while my dad works in software engineering. My brother aspires to have a career in mechanical engineering (or being a YouTube sensation). Again, I’m trying to save them for future posts. Can’t give away all the dirt on them now.

I am a Dallas Cowboys Fan

It’s true. I love football and I especially love Cowboys football. Since Delaware is considered Eagles territory, growing up as a Cowboys fan was not easy. I get a lot of smack talk from my friends who are Eagles friends (trust me, a looooooottt of smack talk), but it is all in good fun. I won’t go into depth on why I like them, but it is obviously not because they are the home team.

I Love Adventure

I’m not the kind of guy that likes to spend all of his time indoors, staying in bed while watching YouTube all day (well, maybe once in a while).

But given the choice, I prefer to go out into the real world and have an adventure. I’m generally very flexible with what I am doing. Whether it’s watching a movie in a theater, doing community service, or even just going on a walk, I like to stay on my feet. Even if it sounds like something I might hate, I give the experience a shot. It’s too bad the country is in a state of emergency and the only adventures I can have are indoors. Yay me!

I Have Tinnitus

Oh boy, we’re getting into some serious crap now. For those of you that don’t know, tinnitus is the sensation of ringing in your ears. You shouldn't fret about this condition, it does not disable me in any way. Since contracting it back in May of 2019, it has gotten more silent by the day. At this point, I can faintly hear it in the quietest of rooms. I’m not sure whether it will ever go away entirely (very mixed opinions on that), but it is at a manageable point for now.

This isn’t a very well known fact about me. I’m sure a lot of my college friends are reading this wondering "Wait, what?" I don't like to talk about it much. I don't want this condition to affect the way others see me. But it is something I feel I should mention at least once and get off my chest. I don’t plan on talking about it much in these blog posts, but you never know.

I Love Video Games

If you didn’t know the last fact, then you probably know this one. I am a nerd, especially when it comes to video games. I have been playing video games since I was five years old. I’m not a huge fan of first person shooters. Most of the video games I play are Mario or Zelda or Pokemon (or all three combined). I play them with my brother a lot of the time, but I also love playing video games with my friends. I remember the countless hours fighting my friends in Super Smash Bros. So many good memories (and broken friendships).

I Was a Swimmer

I played a lot of sports as a kid: Baseball, Soccer, Basketball. I wasn’t that good at many of them. But the one I was really good at was swimming. Ever since I was 10, I have been a swimmer. I've swam for about 4-5 different teams over the years, including my high school team. If you want to know, my best stroke is the Backstroke. Which is kind of weird if you think about it. That is the only stroke where you can’t see where you are going and timing is everything. I’m kinda weird that way.

I Love My Friends and Family

The final yet most important fact about myself. The friends and family that I am surrounded with shape who I am as a person. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. I know that all seems like a cliche, but it is true. Oftentimes, I go out of my way to do stuff for them. Whether it's a small gesture like a compliment or something bigger like buying cookies. I do it for them because I care.

So there you go. 10 facts about myself. Hopefully this article has hooked you for more. As of right now, I plan on posting to this blog Monday’s and Friday’s. Not sure how this schedule will shift in the future, but this is how it will be for now. I really feel I will enjoy writing for this blog. And being deadlocked in this house for the next five months, I'll have plenty of time to write.

Until the next one, stay Matt-astic!
